Looking for structured, in-person chess instruction that balances personalized coaching with collaborative learning? Think Move Chess Academy’s Small Group Chess Lessons are designed to help students strengthen their skills in a focused, supportive environment alongside peers.
These classes are ideal for students who benefit from guided instruction while learning through discussion, gameplay, and shared problem-solving. Lessons are thoughtfully tailored to each student’s skill level—from beginner to advanced—while encouraging confidence, sportsmanship, and strategic thinking.
Small group instruction allows our coaches to give individual attention while still fostering teamwork, critical thinking, and friendly competition. Classes emphasize core chess fundamentals, tactical development, and game analysis to help students continue progressing both in and out of the classroom.
In-person small group lessons are offered at our Columbia and Greenville locations, providing a consistent and engaging learning experience for students across the Midlands and Upstate.

How to Choose the Right Class for Your Child
Beginner (Chess 101)
Tuesdays
6:30–7:30 PM
January 27 – March 31 (No days off)
Beginner (Chess 101): – If your child is new to chess or has little experience, this is the best starting point.
Learn the fundamentals of chess, including board setup, piece movement, check, and checkmate.
Intermediate (Chess 102)
Wednesdays
6:30–7:30 PM
January 28 – April 1 (No days off)
Intermediate (Chess 102):– If your child has completed Chess 101, participated in our after-school program, or has a chess rating of 1000 or below, they belong here.
Advanced
Sundays
6:30–7:30 PM
February 1 – April 19
Off days: March 29 & April 5
Advanced:– If your child has a rating of 1100+, we recommend private lessons for a more customized learning experience.
Beginner
(Chess 101)
For those who are new to chess.
Whether you are a complete beginner or are not quite sure how some of the pieces move, Chess 101 will give you a great start or fill all the gaps in your knowledge about the basics of the game.
Chess 101 classes include lessons about:

Intermediate
(Chess 102)
For those who have completed CHESS 101, participated in our after-school program, or have a chess rating of 1000 or below.
Ready to dive more deeply into chess? Then Chess 102 is just for you! Chess 102 provides an opportunity to take your skills to the next level and begin competing in rated tournaments.
Chess 102 classes reinforce knowledge from Chess 101 and introduce:
Hanging Pieces
Chess Tactics (Forks, Pins, Skewers, Double Attacks, Discovered Attacks)
Common Chess Openings
Algebraic Notation
Opposition
Good and Bad Pieces
Back Rank Checkmate
Exchanges

Advance
For those with a rating of 1100+. Advanced class content will be determined based on individual skill level.
Through our advanced chess classes, you will have the opportunity to work privately with an experienced coach to really delve deeply into chess. Our coaches will tailor their lessons towards your individual strengths and weaknesses to help you understand chess better than you have ever before!
